According to the 2000 Census, Pocahontas County, West Virginia has a population of 9,131 people. Of those, 8,983 (98%) are White, 71 (1%) are Black, and 39 (0%) are Latino[1]. However, 220 (or 2% of the 9,131 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.
Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.
A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Pocahontas County a population of 8,911 with a demographic that is 99% White, 0% Black, and 0% Latino.
