Scurry County, Texas

According to the 2000 Census, Scurry County, Texas has a population of 16,361 people. Of those, 13,296 (81%) are White, 991 (6%) are Black, and 4,544 (28%) are Latino[1]. However, 1,348 (or 8% of the 16,361 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Scurry County a population of 15,013 with a demographic that is 82% White, 4% Black, and 28% Latino.
