Hale County, Texas

According to the 2000 Census, Hale County, Texas has a population of 36,602 people. Of those, 24,438 (67%) are White, 2,121 (6%) are Black, and 17,532 (48%) are Latino[1]. However, 1,651 (or 5% of the 36,602 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Hale County a population of 34,951 with a demographic that is 68% White, 5% Black, and 49% Latino.
