DeWitt County, Texas

According to the 2000 Census, DeWitt County, Texas has a population of 20,013 people. Of those, 15,293 (76%) are White, 2,209 (11%) are Black, and 5,452 (27%) are Latino[1]. However, 1,351 (or 7% of the 20,013 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give DeWitt County a population of 18,662 with a demographic that is 80% White, 9% Black, and 27% Latino.
