Clarendon County, South Carolina

According to the 2000 Census, Clarendon County, South Carolina has a population of 32,502 people. Of those, 14,602 (45%) are White, 17,273 (53%) are Black, and 560 (2%) are Latino[1]. However, 1,215 (or 4% of the 32,502 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Clarendon County a population of 31,287 with a demographic that is 46% White, 52% Black, and 2% Latino.
