According to the 2000 Census, Pasquotank County, North Carolina has a population of 34,897 people. Of those, 19,866 (57%) are White, 13,975 (40%) are Black, and 429 (1%) are Latino[1]. However, 929 (or 3% of the 34,897 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Pasquotank County a population of 33,968 with a demographic that is 58% White, 39% Black, and 1% Latino.
