Northampton County, North Carolina

According to the 2000 Census, Northampton County, North Carolina has a population of 22,086 people. Of those, 8,633 (39%) are White, 13,125 (59%) are Black, and 161 (1%) are Latino[1]. However, 547 (or 2% of the 22,086 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Northampton County a population of 21,539 with a demographic that is 40% White, 59% Black, and 1% Latino.
