Dutchess County, New York

According to the 2000 Census, Dutchess County, New York has a population of 280,150 people. Of those, 234,385 (84%) are White, 26,097 (9%) are Black, and 18,060 (6%) are Latino[1]. However, 6,431 (or 2% of the 280,150 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Dutchess County a population of 273,719 with a demographic that is 85% White, 8% Black, and 6% Latino.
