Leflore County, Mississippi

According to the 2000 Census, Leflore County, Mississippi has a population of 37,947 people. Of those, 11,384 (30%) are White, 25,701 (68%) are Black, and 720 (2%) are Latino[1]. However, 1,251 (or 3% of the 37,947 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Leflore County a population of 36,696 with a demographic that is 31% White, 67% Black, and 2% Latino.
