According to the 2000 Census, Anne Arundel County, Maryland has a population of 489,656 people. Of those, 397,789 (81%) are White, 66,428 (14%) are Black, and 12,902 (3%) are Latino[1]. However, 6,711 (or 1% of the 489,656 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Anne Arundel County a population of 482,945 with a demographic that is 82% White, 13% Black, and 3% Latino.
