Macon County, Georgia

According to the 2000 Census, Macon County, Georgia has a population of 14,074 people. Of those, 5,260 (37%) are White, 8,371 (59%) are Black, and 364 (3%) are Latino[1]. However, 734 (or 5% of the 14,074 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Macon County a population of 13,340 with a demographic that is 38% White, 59% Black, and 2% Latino.
