Hancock County, Georgia

According to the 2000 Census, Hancock County, Georgia has a population of 10,076 people. Of those, 2,162 (21%) are White, 7,835 (78%) are Black, and 54 (1%) are Latino[1]. However, 1,367 (or 14% of the 10,076 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Hancock County a population of 8,709 with a demographic that is 20% White, 79% Black, and 0% Latino.
