DeSoto County, Florida

According to the 2000 Census, DeSoto County, Florida has a population of 32,209 people. Of those, 23,619 (73%) are White, 4,098 (13%) are Black, and 8,019 (25%) are Latino[1]. However, 1,601 (or 5% of the 32,209 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give DeSoto County a population of 30,608 with a demographic that is 75% White, 10% Black, and 25% Latino.
