Russell County, Alabama

According to the 2000 Census, Russell County, Alabama has a population of 49,756 people. Of those, 28,209 (57%) are White, 20,319 (41%) are Black, and 744 (2%) are Latino[1]. However, 295 (or 1% of the 49,756 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Russell County a population of 49,461 with a demographic that is 57% White, 41% Black, and 1% Latino.
