Marion County, Florida

According to the 2000 Census, Marion County, Florida has a population of 258,916 people. Of those, 217,909 (84%) are White, 29,900 (11%) are Black, and 15,616 (6%) are Latino[1]. However, 3,780 (or 1% of the 258,916 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Marion County a population of 255,136 with a demographic that is 85% White, 11% Black, and 6% Latino.

Reported in
Census 2000
Total 258,916 3,780 255,136
White 217,909 1,943 215,966
Black 29,900 1,659 28,241
Latino 15,616 239 15,377

[1]The numbers for Whites, Blacks and Latinos may not add up to the total number because we have not included racial groups other than Whites and Blacks and because the Census Bureau considers "Latino" to be an ethnicity, not a race. Most of the people reported as being Latino are also counted as being White or Black.
