Ned Lamont&#8217;s desk"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday, the Connecticut General Assembly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cga.ct.gov\/asp\/cgabillstatus\/cgabillstatus.asp?selBillType=Bill&#038;bill_num=SB00753&#038;which_year=2021\">passed SB 753,<\/a> a bill that will strengthen state democracy by requiring that incarcerated people be counted as residents of their hometowns, not their prison cells, at redistricting time. If Governor Ned Lamont signs the bill, it will make Connecticut <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2020\/12\/18\/building-momentum\/\">the eleventh state<\/a> to end the practice known as prison gerrymandering.<\/p>\n<p>This victory is the result of years-long efforts by Senator Gary Winfield and advocates including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/connecticut\/\">Common Cause Connecticut,<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ctnaacp.org\/\">NAACP of Connecticut,<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/law.yale.edu\/studying-law-yale\/clinical-and-experiential-learning\/our-clinics\/peter-gruber-rule-law-clinic\">Yale Law Peter Gruber Rule of Law Clinic.<\/a> The law will go into effect for this year\u2019s redistricting process, bringing an immediate end to the prison-driven distortion of representation in Connecticut.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Wednesday, the Connecticut General Assembly passed SB 753, a bill that will strengthen state democracy by requiring that incarcerated people be counted as residents of their hometowns, not their prison cells, at redistricting time.
