{"id":9632,"date":"2021-01-12T16:20:23","date_gmt":"2021-01-12T21:20:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/?p=9632"},"modified":"2021-01-15T11:42:12","modified_gmt":"2021-01-15T16:42:12","slug":"crc-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2021\/01\/12\/crc-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"California\u2019s Redistricting Commission votes to adopt prison gerrymandering reform"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\nAfter the 2010 redistricting cycle, the California legislature passed a collection of bills&mdash;AB 420 (2011), AB 1986 (2012), AB 2172 (2018), and AB 849 (2019)&mdash;that sought to end prison gerrymandering at all levels of government.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nAt the <i>local level<\/i>, that legislation requires city and county governments to adjust redistricting data by counting incarcerated people in their home communities, rather than at the correctional facilities where they are detained. At the <i>state level<\/i>, the legislation recommends that the <a href=\"https:\/\/wedrawthelines.ca.gov\/\">Citizens Redistricting Commission<\/a> make that same adjustment.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThis morning, the Commission convened to discuss and vote on that recommendation.
