{"id":9202,"date":"2019-04-16T15:23:01","date_gmt":"2019-04-16T19:23:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/?p=9202"},"modified":"2019-04-16T15:23:01","modified_gmt":"2019-04-16T19:23:01","slug":"washington-house","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2019\/04\/16\/washington-house\/","title":{"rendered":"Bill to end prison gerrymandering passes second chamber in Washington State"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/washington.html\">Washington State<\/a> is poised to become the fifth state to end prison gerrymandering. <a href=\"https:\/\/app.leg.wa.gov\/billsummary?BillNumber=5287&#038;Initiative=false&#038;Year=2019\">SB 5287<\/a>, sponsored by Senators Darneille and Hunt, introduced on January 17, 2019; the bill passed the Senate on March 11, 2019, and the House on April 16, 2019.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nBecause the bill was amended in the House, it will now go back to the Senate for a concurrence vote. (The House amendment clarified how incarcerated people from out of state or with unknown addresses would be counted.)\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2018\/02\/07\/frn2018\/\">Census Bureau has decided to count incarcerated people in the wrong place again<\/a> at the next Census, so states are taking action on their own now to avoid prison gerrymandering after the 2020 Census.
