{"id":7845,"date":"2014-06-18T14:34:13","date_gmt":"2014-06-18T18:34:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/?p=7845"},"modified":"2014-06-18T14:34:13","modified_gmt":"2014-06-18T18:34:13","slug":"mcalester-solving","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2014\/06\/18\/mcalester-solving\/","title":{"rendered":"Accidental prison gerrymandering almost solved in McAlester, Okla."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>You may remember McAlester, Oklahoma, the city that historically avoided prison gerrymandering, but was <a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2011\/10\/25\/mcalester-city-okla-councilor-continues-to-question-necessity-of-prison-based-gerrymandering\/\">reluctantly prison-gerrymandering<\/a> its wards in 2011, having <a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2011\/09\/19\/unintentional\/\">inadvertently bound themselves<\/a> to do so in a <a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2011\/04\/06\/mcalester\/\">recent charter amendment<\/a>.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nToday I&#8217;m pleased to report that McAlester is well on its way to solving the problem by revising its charter once again to allow the city to exclude incarcerated populations from the data the city uses to draw the city council wards. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcalesternews.com\/local\/x1396887255\/City-approves-resolution-for-August-ballot\">Just last week<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mcalesternews.com\/local\/x1760100707\/MRHC-doubles-its-ballot-chances\">the city council approved a resolution<\/a> (Proposition V) that will put the charter change on the August ballot for voters&#8217; approval.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe charter amendment will be up for a vote on August 26, hopefully I&#8217;ll be able to report back that McAlester residents chose to end prison gerrymandering once again in the city.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>McAlester, Okla. inadvertently forced itself to engage in prison gerrymandering after the 2010 Census, is now seeking charter amendment to solve the problem.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":17,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"coauthors":[30],"class_list":["post-7845","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-uncategorized"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7845","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/17"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=7845"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/7845\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=7845"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=7845"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=7845"},{"taxonomy":"author","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/coauthors?post=7845"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
