{"id":7586,"date":"2013-12-20T16:18:40","date_gmt":"2013-12-20T21:18:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/?p=7586"},"modified":"2014-01-29T11:54:23","modified_gmt":"2014-01-29T16:54:23","slug":"whmp-ma-towns","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2013\/12\/20\/whmp-ma-towns\/","title":{"rendered":"WHMP covers prison gerrymandering in Massachusetts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>\n  I joined <a href=\"http:\/\/whmp.com\/podcasts\/shows\/bill-newman\/\">Bill Newman<\/a> for a segment on his WHMP show yesterday to <a href=\"\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/audio\/Aleks_WHMP_12-19-2013.mp3\" title=\"WHMP segment\">talk about how prison gerrymandering skews democracy in Massachusetts<\/a>.\n  <\/p>\n<p>I explained how the Census Bureau&#8217;s method of counting incarcerated people (at the location of the prison rather than where they reside) gives extra political clout to people who happen to live near jails or prisons.\n   <\/p>\n<p>\n     Although each town and the state can take action on its own to solve the problem, a change at the Census Bureau would efficiently end prison gerrymandering across the country as well as in Massachusetts&#8217; <a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/ma\/towns.html\">town meetings<\/a> and at the State&#8217;s <a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/testimony\/PPI_Demos_Testimony_MA-2012-Jun-27.pdf\">House and Senate<\/a>.
