When we  first started working on prison-based gerrymandering, almost no one had heard of the problem. Today, more than one in five U.S. residents has  been protected from it:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.prisonpolicy.org\/atlas\/momentum.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/images\/momentum_590w.jpg\" alt=\"map showing state and local government that are taking action to end prison-based gerrymandering\" width=\"590\" height=\"346\" class=\"\"  \/><\/a> <\/p>\n<p>And yesterday the <a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2013\/05\/16\/il-house-hb62\/\">Illinois House passed HB 62<\/a> which would end prison gerrymandering in state legislative redistricting. Currently, 1.3 million people live in the <a href=\"\/local\/\">22 Illinois cities and counties<\/a> reflected on our map that avoid prison gerrymandering in county or municipal redistricting.
