{"id":6922,"date":"2013-04-02T15:33:54","date_gmt":"2013-04-02T19:33:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/?p=6922"},"modified":"2015-06-18T11:00:20","modified_gmt":"2015-06-18T15:00:20","slug":"hb-6679-hearing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2013\/04\/02\/hb-6679-hearing\/","title":{"rendered":"Connecticut considers bill to end prison gerrymandering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Will <a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/connecticut.html\">Connecticut<\/a> be the next state to bring an end to prison gerrymandering?<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ct-n.com\/CTNplayer.asp?odID=8854\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/images\/hb-6679-4-1-13-250w.png\" alt=\"Peter Wagner testifies in support of HB 6679\" width=\"250\" height=\"173\" class=\"report cover right\"  \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Yesterday Peter <a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/testimony\/Wagner_SUPPORT_HB6679.pdf\">testified<\/a> before the Connecticut Legislature&#8217;s Joint Committee on Judiciary in support of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cga.ct.gov\/asp\/cgabillstatus\/cgabillstatus.asp?selBillType=Bill&#038;bill_num=6679&#038;which_year=2013&#038;SUBMIT1.x=0&#038;SUBMIT1.y=0&#038;SUBMIT1=Normal\">HB 6679<\/a>, a bill that would end prison gerrymandering by requiring incarcerated people to be counted at their home addresses for redistricting purposes (you can watch Peter&#8217;s testimony at <a href=\"http:\/\/ct-n.com\/CTNplayer.asp?odID=8854\">CT-N<\/a> starting at 5 hours 38 minutes).<\/p>\n<p>Leah Aden of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naacpldf.org\">NAACP LDF<\/a> submitted <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naacpldf.org\/update\/ldf-attorney-submits-testimony-support-ct-bill-end-prison-based-gerrymandering\">testimony in support of the bill<\/a>, and David McGuire of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acluct.org\">ACLU of Connecticut<\/a> <a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/testimony\/ACLU-CT_HB6679_support.pdf\">testified in support<\/a> as well.<\/p>\n<p><p>Our allies at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.commoncause.org\/about\/staff-directory\/cheri-quickmire.html\">Common Cause in Connecticut<\/a> have been instrumental in getting this issue on the legislature&#8217;s agenda, and there&#8217;s a broad base of support from the public and the press for ending prison gerrymandering in Connecticut.
