{"id":3121,"date":"2011-07-27T15:58:57","date_gmt":"2011-07-27T19:58:57","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/?p=3121"},"modified":"2021-12-15T22:33:32","modified_gmt":"2021-12-16T03:33:32","slug":"letter-to-latfor","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2011\/07\/27\/letter-to-latfor\/","title":{"rendered":"Prison Policy Initiative and others send joint letter to LATFOR demanding compliance with NY law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Prison Policy Initiative and six other civil rights advocacy organizations have just submitted a <a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/little\/LATFOR_joint_letter_7_27_11.pdf\">joint letter<\/a> to the New York Legislative Task Force on Demographic Research and Reapportionment (LATFOR) demanding that it comply with New York&#8217;s 2010 law (<a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/NYS_A9710-D.html\">Part XX<\/a>) that ended prison-based gerrymandering. Earlier this month LATFOR announced that it plans to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.timesunion.com\/opinion\/article\/What-happened-to-the-promise-1459661.php\">simply ignore the law<\/a> due to a current <a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/little\/\">lawsuit seeking<\/a> to revert to the old method of unfairly counting incarcerated people where they are imprisoned.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/little\/LATFOR_joint_letter_7_27_11.pdf\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/images\/newsthumbs\/LATFOR_joint_letter_7_27_11-thumb250w.png\" alt=\"letter thumbnail\" width=\"250\" height=\"325\" class=\"right\"  \/> <\/a> <\/p>\n<p>The letter states:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Failure to comply promptly with the law\u2019s requirement that incarcerated persons be reallocated for purposes of redistricting would be a serious violation of legal obligations.
