{"id":2447,"date":"2011-04-22T08:42:14","date_gmt":"2011-04-22T12:42:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/?p=2447"},"modified":"2011-07-13T12:57:23","modified_gmt":"2011-07-13T16:57:23","slug":"group-quarters-released","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2011\/04\/22\/group-quarters-released\/","title":{"rendered":"Census Bureau releases group quarters data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Census Bureau released the Advance Group Quarters yesterday &#8212; earlier than expected &#8212; and many have been eagerly awaiting this data so that they can identify prison populations in the redistricting data and avoid prison-based gerrymandering.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nThe Prison Policy Initiative, in partnership with Demos, issued a press release about the Advance Group Quarters File yesterday. A copy of the press release can be found below.\n<\/p>\n<p>\nLate last night, the Prison Policy Initiative finished translating the Bureau&#8217;s data in to some user-friendlier formats, including:\n<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nA national shapefile with all of the group quarters data\n<\/li>\n<li>\nBlock level tables of the correctional facilities searchable by county\n<\/li>\n<li>\nGoogle maps of the blocks that contain facilities\n<\/li>\n<li>\nConnecting the new census data to a database of annotations of each of the 5,393 blocks that contain some kind of correctional facility.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\nThese tools are available at <a href=\"\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/data\/\">http:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/data\/<\/a>.
