{"id":1606,"date":"2010-08-13T09:18:06","date_gmt":"2010-08-13T13:18:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/?p=1606"},"modified":"2010-09-02T13:23:51","modified_gmt":"2010-09-02T17:23:51","slug":"registerstar","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2010\/08\/13\/registerstar\/","title":{"rendered":"Equal representation coming to Hudson, NY"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When New York passed a law ending prison-based gerrymandering, the residents of Hudson, NY are among those who will now have the representation in their city government based on the principle of &#8220;one person, one vote.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Hudson, which about 6,500 people call home, uses weighted voting on its city council. This means that each Alderman elected to the council get a number of votes proportional the number of people she represents.<\/p>\n<p>The city is divided into 5 wards, each ward elects 2 Aldermen to the council to represent its residents.  Ward 3, however, contains the Hudson Correctional Facility.
