{"id":1428,"date":"2010-07-01T16:11:33","date_gmt":"2010-07-01T20:11:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/?p=1428"},"modified":"2010-07-01T16:17:41","modified_gmt":"2010-07-01T20:17:41","slug":"newsweek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.prisonersofthecensus.org\/news\/2010\/07\/01\/newsweek\/","title":{"rendered":"Newsweek covers prison-based gerrymandering"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/2010\/07\/01\/do-rural-prisons-benefit-locals.html\">Do Rural Prisons Benefit Locals?<\/a>,&#8221; in the July 1 issue of Newsweek, uses our research to highlight prison-based gerrymandering in New York, putting it in the larger context of economic and demographic shifts in the state.<\/p>\n<p>Although the piece notes that &#8220;the New York proposal [to end prison-based gerrymandering], like the new law in Maryland, would affect only legislative redistricting, not state funding for social services,&#8221;  some politicians are still focused on money rather than democracy.<\/p>\n<p>Predictably, Senator Griffo complains:<\/p>\n<p class=\"quote\">&#8220;Upstate communities accepted prisons for the economic benefit &#8230; but there\u2019s also other impacts, both positive and negative. The fire department, police department, and hospitals all have to respond to the prison and the inmates.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>The Senator is right in part: prisons cost money. The state pays the actual cost of incarceration, although sometimes communities do not recover the indirect costs of hosting a tax-exempt institution.
