Source: The Census Bureau doesn't directly publish counts of correctional populations by facility type. Our calculation of the facility type according to Census Bureau comes from a comparison of 2010 Summary File 1, tables P42 (line 3) and PCT20 (lines 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9). Because the tract (or tract part) population data matches the population listed for the block, the tract demographic data was attributed to the block. In those cases where there was more than one block that contained a correctional facility in the tract we imputed the type of facility to all blocks in the tract where the total adult correctional population for the tract in table PCT20 line 3 matched the population of that type in the tract in table PCT20 lines 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9. Because all populations in correctional facilities for adults were in the same type of facility, that facility type was attributed to all blocks.

Source: The Census Bureau doesn't directly publish counts of correctional populations by race/ethnicity. Our calculation of race/ethnicity comes from a comparison of 2010 Summary File 1, tables P42 (lines 2 and 3), and P29A-I (lines 27). Because the institutionalized population and correctional population of the block match, the demographic data of the institutionalized population was attributed to the correctional population.
