Stand up for justice
The first $2,500 we raise through Tuesday, May 2 will be matched by a generous donor as part of the “Valley Gives Day” challenge. Can you stand up for smart and effective criminal justice policy with a gift today?.

Thank you.

P.S. If we meet our goal, the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts will enter us into a drawing to have all of your gifts matched a second time!

Potter County, Texas

According to the 2000 Census, Potter County, Texas has a population of 113,546 people. Of those, 77,890 (68%) are White, 11,308 (10%) are Black, and 31,921 (27%) are Latino[1]. However, 5,044 (or 4% of the 113,546 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Potter County a population of 108,502 with a demographic that is 70% White, 8% Black, and 28% Latino.

Reported in
Census 2000
Total 113,546 5,044 108,502
White 77,890 1,859 76,031
Black 11,308 2,116 9,192
Latino 31,921 1,125 30,796

[1]The numbers for Whites, Blacks and Latinos may not add up to the total number because we have not included racial groups other than Whites and Blacks and because the Census Bureau considers "Latino" to be an ethnicity, not a race. Most of the people reported as being Latino are also counted as being White or Black.
