Edgefield County, South Carolina

According to the 2000 Census, Edgefield County, South Carolina has a population of 24,595 people. Of those, 13,962 (57%) are White, 10,209 (42%) are Black, and 503 (2%) are Latino[1]. However, 2,413 (or 10% of the 24,595 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Edgefield County a population of 22,182 with a demographic that is 60% White, 39% Black, and 1% Latino.
