According to the 2000 Census, Granville County, North Carolina has a population of 48,498 people. Of those, 29,459 (61%) are White, 16,943 (35%) are Black, and 1,951 (4%) are Latino[1]. However, 3,533 (or 7% of the 48,498 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Granville County a population of 44,965 with a demographic that is 63% White, 33% Black, and 4% Latino.
