According to the 2000 Census, Edgecombe County, North Carolina has a population of 55,606 people. Of those, 22,278 (40%) are White, 31,949 (57%) are Black, and 1,554 (3%) are Latino[1]. However, 619 (or 1% of the 55,606 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Edgecombe County a population of 54,987 with a demographic that is 40% White, 57% Black, and 3% Latino.
