Stand up for justice
The first $2,500 we raise through Tuesday, May 2 will be matched by a generous donor as part of the “Valley Gives Day” challenge. Can you stand up for smart and effective criminal justice policy with a gift today?.

Thank you.

P.S. If we meet our goal, the Community Foundation of Western Massachusetts will enter us into a drawing to have all of your gifts matched a second time!

Leake County, Mississippi

According to the 2000 Census, Leake County, Mississippi has a population of 20,940 people. Of those, 11,755 (55%) are White, 7,835 (35%) are Black, and 440 (2%) are Latino[1]. However, 567 (or 3% of the 20,940 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Leake County a population of 20,373 with a demographic that is 57% White, 36% Black, and 2% Latino.

Reported in
Census 2000
Total 20,940 567 20,373
White 11,755 135 11,620
Black 7,835 420 7,415
Latino 440 4 436

[1]The numbers for Whites, Blacks and Latinos may not add up to the total number because we have not included racial groups other than Whites and Blacks and because the Census Bureau considers "Latino" to be an ethnicity, not a race. Most of the people reported as being Latino are also counted as being White or Black.
