Wilcox County, Georgia

According to the 2000 Census, Wilcox County, Georgia has a population of 8,577 people. Of those, 5,370 (63%) are White, 3,106 (36%) are Black, and 139 (2%) are Latino[1]. However, 1,263 (or 15% of the 8,577 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Wilcox County a population of 7,314 with a demographic that is 68% White, 31% Black, and 2% Latino.
