Escambia County, Florida

According to the 2000 Census, Escambia County, Florida has a population of 294,410 people. Of those, 213,008 (72%) are White, 63,010 (21%) are Black, and 7,935 (3%) are Latino[1]. However, 7,618 (or 3% of the 294,410 people) are not residents by choice but are people in prison.

Even though prisoners cannot participate in the local community, the Census Bureau nevertheless counts them as residents of the county where they are incarcerated.

A more accurate description would not include the prisoners. This would give Escambia County a population of 286,792 with a demographic that is 73% White, 21% Black, and 3% Latino.
